Vicky Galey, aged 15 from Louth,
Lincolnshire, has officially become the youngest person in England to gain the
nationally recognised BIIAB National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (NCPLH)
qualification, by being one day younger than the previous holder.
The NCPLH is a qualification from the BII’s wholly owned awarding body, BIIAB
and is an accredited qualification that is now a compulsory requirement for
applicants of a Personal Licence, which will permit the holder to then sell or
authorise the sale of alcohol. Sadly Vicky will have to wait over two years
before applying for her Personal Licence as the law only permits applicants of
Personal Licence to be aged 18 or over.
Whilst on a two week work experience placement at Kai’s Bar in Louth, Vicky, who
is currently a student at Monks’ Dyke Technology College in Louth, was offered a
spare place on the NCPLH course running at the venue on 18 October. Vicky rose
to the challenge and attended the course.
Vicky said “I found the day very interesting and learnt a lot about the pub
industry. As a result of my work experience fortnight I would like to work
within the industry part time whilst studying for my A levels next year.”
Michael Kheng, Director of Kurnia Licensing Consultants said, “Training both in
the legal and social responsibilities of all people involved in the licensed
trade is now paramount since the new licensing laws cam into effect last year.
The training of most of the staff employed by Kurnia, at not only Kai’s Bar
Louth but also other venues in Lincolnshire, operated by the company. It has
assisted in the company becoming finalists in this year’s Responsible Drinks
Retailing Awards.”
The winners of the awards will be announced at an exclusive luncheon being held in London on 21 November 06.
Mr Kheng added, “For someone such as Vicky with no experience in the trade, apart from her two weeks work experience, to study for the qualification and then to pass with a credible 85% is an achievement that she should be proud of.”
Cathie Smith, Director of BIIAB, said, “It is fantastic that someone as young as
Vicky has shown an active interest in the licensed retail sector. I hope that
her interest in the sector as a future career path continues as the licensed
trade needs enthusiastic and professional young people to help it flourish.”
